Parks & Recreation

Cherry Tree Wood is a 5.3-hectare park in East Finchley. It is a Site of Local Importance for Nature Conservation. Located opposite East Finchley Underground station, it contains woodland and grassland, a playground, tennis courts and a café.

Its history may date back to prehistoric times, and the park was part of the hunting grounds of the Bishop of London in the 12th century. It is a remnant of the large medieval wood called Finchley Wood, which was shown in Great Hornsey Park in John Rocque‘s map of 1754.

A little further is the world-famous Hampstead Heath, which is one of the largest open green spaces in London. Surprisingly for central London, it encompasses a variety of different habitats including ancient woodland and grassland. Recreational facilities include a lido, swimming ponds and various sports pitches, including a croquet lawn.

During the summer Hampstead Heath provides an impressive vantage point for viewing the London skyline.

 What the owners think!

We love this house. It’s light, airy, and quiet, and is a great place to work and relax.  We can step out onto the sunny garden terrace from 3 different rooms, where we can enjoy the large South facing garden, full of flowers, raised vegetable beds and productive fruit trees. It’s always a pleasure to sit in the sun, listen to birdsong, and breath   clean air.

We’ve enjoyed having so much inside and outside space, with a lot of room, and a home that could be adapted to our children’s changing needs as they grew to adulthood.  This has been especially valuable under COVID lockdown. The house has superfast fibre internet connectivity, and a dedicated home office, and 3 of us have been able to work from home in our own spaces without disturbing each other, and with good room to take online Yoga or Dance classes.

The view from upstairs at the rear of the house is of treetops and a green horizon, very rare in London.   We love walking or jogging in the lovely nearby Highgate Woods run and the beautiful Hampstead Heath is just a short trip by car.

The location is perfect – midway between Muswell Hill and East Finchley – with East Finchley tube only a 10-minute walk, making it easy and fast to nip into central London, and there’s a choice of buses.  We have off-street parking for 2 cars, which means we never worry about safe parking spaces.

We’ve enjoyed being close to the good local shops, and going to the excellent Phoenix Indie cinema or Muswell Hill Everyman.

We’ve been very happy here for nearly 20 years, and believe this is the best place to live in North London.
